There’s something magical about capturing love stories, especially when they unfold against the backdrop of one of Florida’s most breathtaking beaches. Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing Roger and Mikhayla’s Siesta Key engagement session, and I’m excited to share their beautiful story and some insights from this romantic sunset photoshoot.
Roger and Mikhayla’s journey began eight years ago in their undergraduate school. Like many great love stories, theirs blossomed from friendship into something truly special. Now residing in Phoenix as young professionals, they chose to return to the place where their commitment deepened – Siesta Key Beach – for their engagement session.
Why Siesta Key, you ask? Well, it turns out this isn’t just any beach for this adorable couple. A year ago, with the sun setting and waves gently lapping at the shore, Roger got down on one knee and asked Mikhayla to spend forever with him. Needless to say, the beach holds a special place in their hearts, making it the perfect location for their Siesta Key engagement session.
For those unfamiliar with Siesta Key Beach, let me paint a picture for you. Located on Florida’s Gulf Coast, this stretch of shoreline is renowned for its powdery white sand, crystal-clear waters, and stunning sunsets. It’s no wonder it’s consistently ranked among America’s best beaches and is a favorite spot for engagement and wedding photography.
As a photographer, Siesta Key offers a dream canvas for engagement sessions. The soft, white sand reflects light beautifully, creating a natural softbox effect that flatters every subject. The gentle dunes and swaying sea oats provide texture and depth to images, while the vast expanse of the Gulf of Mexico offers a serene backdrop.
We timed Roger and Mikhayla’s Siesta Key engagement session to coincide with the golden hour – that magical time just before sunset when the light is warm, soft, and incredibly flattering. The sky transformed into a canvas of oranges, pinks, and purples, casting a romantic glow over the beach and our lovely couple.
For couples planning their own beach engagement sessions, I always recommend scheduling during this time. Not only does it provide the most beautiful natural lighting, but it also tends to be less crowded, allowing for more intimate and uninterrupted moments.
For Roger and Mikhayla’s Siesta Key engagement session, we incorporated elements that spoke to their journey as a couple. We started with some casual shots of them walking along the shoreline, reminiscing about their proposal. The joy and love in their eyes as they recounted that special moment was palpable.
As the light began to soften, we moved to capture more intimate poses. I guided them through some gentle prompts, encouraging natural interactions that showcased their connection. One of my favorite shots from the session shows them dancing in the shallow water, with Mikhayla’s engagement ring catching the last rays of sunlight.
We also took advantage of the beach’s natural elements. The couple wrote “8 years” in the sand, symbolizing their journey together, and we captured a beautiful shot of their rings nestled in a bed of seashells they had collected.
Beach engagement sessions, particularly at sunset, have a universal appeal. They embody romance, freedom, and the promise of new beginnings. For couples like Roger and Mikhayla, who have a personal connection to the location, it adds an extra layer of meaning to the images.
These sessions also offer versatility. In a single shoot, we can capture a range of moods and styles – from playful and carefree shots of the couple splashing in the waves to elegant, formal poses with the sunset as a backdrop. This variety ensures that every couple finds images that resonate with their unique style and personality.
